Additions
If you sat down with 100 people and asked them to tell you
honestly, what are the biggest reasons why they don't put an
addition on their house, chances are they'd tell you something like
this:
- "Too expensive"
- "Unsure what to do"
- "Don't think I have enough room"
- "I'm afraid it'll turn into a big mess"
Suffice it to say, unless there's definitely no money available,
then most fears basically boil down to fear of the
unknown.
In other words, since putting an addition on is definitely a big
job, even thinking about what to do can be enough to give you a
headache.
So then, if you want to put an addition on your house, the first
thing you need to do is start with an honest budget because a home
addition (unlike an less expensive upgrade such as a rear-deck) is
generally a substantial expense.
On the other hand though, since we've never had a customer with a
new addition who didn't feel great about the new space, in our
(slightly biased) opinion, we think money spent on a home addition
is well worth it.
However, worth it or not, additions are typically substantial
projects, so a sound budget is a must. And for this reason, on every
addition we do, the first step is that we come meet with you and
make sure that your expectations regarding the sufficiency of your budget
are realistic.
Chances are that you will be able to afford the addition that you
want, but the first step is that we must sit down together and get
everyone on the same page. And the good news here is that this
initial meeting is low cost to you.
In other words, if you are serious about putting an addition on
your house, we're happy to discuss your ideas, budget and space
limitations
At this initial meeting, we'll take plenty of notes and in short
order, we'll get back to you with some recommendations and pricing
ideas. Armed with this information, you'll be able to think through
which way you'd like to go and at our next meeting, we can present
you with a formalized design/build agreement.
In our experience, the best way to avoid trouble when doing a
home addition is to discuss and agree on all the important details
up front - this way you get the addition you want - with no unfair
cost surprises later on.
